Creating Service Areas

This guide walks you through creating a new service area with a custom boundary polygon.

Step 1: Open Service Areas Settings

Navigate to SettingsService Areas from the main menu.

Step 2: Start Creating

Click the + Add Service Area button to open the creation modal.

Step 3: Enter Basic Details

On the left side of the modal, fill in:

FieldDescription
NameA descriptive name for the area (e.g., "North Brisbane", "Gold Coast")
ColourClick a preset colour or use the colour picker for a custom shade
DescriptionOptional notes about what suburbs or regions are included
ActiveToggle whether this area is used for property assignment

Step 4: Draw the Boundary

The right side of the modal displays a full-screen map. To draw your service area boundary:

  1. Click Draw Polygon in the Drawing Tools section
  2. Click on the map to place your first point
  3. Continue clicking to add more points around your boundary
  4. Each point is numbered and can be dragged to adjust its position
  5. When you have at least 3 points, click Complete or click near the first point to close the polygon

Drawing Tips

  • Zoom in for more precise boundary placement
  • Drag points after placing them to fine-tune the boundary
  • Clear removes all points so you can start over
  • A minimum of 3 points is required to form a valid polygon

Step 5: View Existing Areas and Properties

If you already have service areas defined, you can toggle Show Other Areas to display them on the map. This helps you:

  • Avoid overlapping boundaries
  • Ensure complete coverage
  • See how the new area fits with existing zones

Existing areas appear with semi-transparent fills and their names labelled.

View Properties on Map

Toggle Show Properties to display all your company's properties as coloured dots on the map:

  • Coloured dots indicate properties already assigned to a service area (matching that area's colour)
  • Grey dots indicate properties not yet assigned to any service area

This helps you draw boundaries that include the properties you want to service.

Step 6: Save

Once you're happy with the name, colour, and boundary, click Create to save your service area.

What Happens Next?

After creating a service area:

  1. Properties are assigned - Any property with coordinates inside the boundary is automatically linked to this area
  2. Schedule shows colours - Visits to properties in this area will display a coloured left border on the schedule
  3. You can edit anytime - Click the pencil icon on any area to adjust its boundary or details

Example Areas

Here's how you might divide a regional service business:

Area NameColourDescription
North ZoneGreenSuburbs north of the river
South ZoneBlueSouthern suburbs and industrial areas
CBD & InnerOrangeCity centre and inner-ring suburbs
CoastalCyanBeachside and waterfront properties

Overlapping Areas

If a property falls within multiple service areas, it will be assigned to the smallest area that contains it. This allows you to create sub-areas within larger zones.
